Indian students accounted for 17.3% of the total foreign students in the U.S. in 2016-17, contributing over $6 billion to the American economy, according to the 2017 Open Doors data released by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with the USA department of state's bureau of educational and cultural affairs.

The number of American students studying in India dropped from 4,438 to 4,181 with India ranking 15.

Ohio State ranks 17th in the nation with 7,684* worldwide students enrolled in 2016, an 8 percent increase in enrollment from the previous year.

The Institute of International Education says its survey of 500 schools found a 7% drop in the number of new students coming from overseas this fall. Ohio State ranks 2nd in the nation for the number of students participating in short-term programs with 2,774 studying overseas for one to eight weeks during the academic year.

California, New York, Texas, Pennsylvania and MA are the top five USA states receiving Indian students and each saw an increase in worldwide students in 2016-17, according to the 2017 "Open Doors Report" released Monday. The Institute of International Education has conducted an annual statistical survey of international students in the United States since its founding in 1919 and in partnership with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs since 1972.

Purdue is one of only 14 institutions to be ranked in the top 25 for worldwide student enrollment and study overseas participation.

These numbers were not evenly distributed: 45% of the campuses reported decline in new enrolments for fall 2017, while 31% reported increase in new enrolments and 24% reported no change from a year ago.

Noting that students continue to be attracted to the high quality and diverse opportunities offered by colleges and universities in the USA, he said it is critical for United States institutions to set strategic goals and be proactive in reaching out to students and families in a wide range of countries in the coming year.

Putting the numbers into context - where are the declines happening?

.

The scaling back of large Saudi and Brazilian government scholarship programs were a significant factor, said Rajika Bhandari, research and evaluation specialist for the Institute of International Education. Purdue is one of eight US institutions to host more than 10,000 worldwide students.

OH had the nation's eighth-largest foreign student enrollment in 2016 with 38,680 students, a 2.5 percent increase from 2015, according to an annual report.

The top states for worldwide students remained unchanged past year, with California topping the list followed by New York, Texas and MA. Canadian schools that saw sharp gains in applications said those students might otherwise have gone to the United States.

"They may need to be more intentional in recruitment", he said.

Students from China and India made up almost half of all worldwide students a year ago, reaching a combined 530,000.

Worldwide student enrollment experienced an increase of more than 550 students; Ohio State enrolled 7,117 global students in 2015. Furthermore, the record also marks the eleventh consecutive year of continued expansion for the total number of global students in U.S. higher education, said the report.

"It's much too soon to tell what is the defining factor", he said. The top host destinations for USA students studying overseas in 2015/16 were the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France, and Germany.

Purdue offers scholarships for qualified undergraduate students who participate in a study overseas program as part of Purdue Moves, a range of initiatives created to broaden Purdue's global impact and enhance educational opportunities for its students.
