Mozilla: Superfast Firefox Quantum Is Most Significant Update Since 1.0

Mozilla says Firefox Quantum also uses 30% less memory than Google Chrome.

Mozilla's latest major update for Firefox is here, and it brings with it a major speed boost, a new look, and more. And as you do so, you'll notice another change: Google is now the default search engine again - at least if you live in the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong and Taiwan. "No other browser can do this", Mozilla claims.

Mozilla's engineers totally rebuilt the core engine, giving it brand new "guts", and interacting with 7 million lines of code in the process. The software is written in Mozilla's homegrown Rust programming language and uses multiple processor cores for work that has historically been handled with just one. The result: a significant speed increase. Another new feature prioritizes the tab a user is now on so that it works better and doesn't freeze up or become unresponsive, according to the Mozilla blog. With Quantum, it hopes to regain some of its market share and demonstrate its commitment to maintaining Firefox going forward.

The wave of change isn't limited to under-the-hood improvements, Firefox 57 now features the Photon UI.

The UI matches the streamlined austerity of rivals such as Google's Chrome and Microsoft's Edge. Articles recommended by Pocket appear whenever a tab is opened.

When Mozilla announced the Yahoo deal in 2014, it said that this was a five-year deal.

You can snag the new browser from Mozilla's site. It was, to Verizon, which this summer completed a $4.5 billion acquisition of the former Internet giant.

Mozilla's return to Google as the default in the US and Canada - the same markets Yahoo had sewed up with its 2014 pact - implied that it had walked away from the latter search engine. Instead, the recommendations come from Pocket users around the world. Since then, it's scratched back to 13% as of October. All versions of Firefox now have a 9.1 percent market share, below IE + Edge and Safari. Mozilla's also extensively updated the browser engine, the internal components responsible for displaying webpages, applying styles and handling interactive elements. "It would have to be so unique". "It's a futile effort".

Firefox Quantum is available to download now at the Source link below for your computer or iOS or Android device.

"In a year from now, it will be the same all over again", Gold said, referring to Firefox's minor player status.
