Friends rally around Liam Miller as footballer faces cancer battle

Celtic and Manchester United have expressed their support for their former midfielder Liam Miller after it emerged that the 36-year-old has pancreatic cancer.

Believed to be back home in Cork receiving treatment, former Hibs player Tam McManus tweeted that Miller: "was in the US for treatment this month and flies back tomorrow to start chemo here".

Another ex-Celtic team-mate, Chris Sutton, tweeted: "All thoughts and prayers go out to my old teammate Liam Miller tonight". We are thinking of him and we hope he can pull through and he's strong anyway.

He also played for Leeds United, Sunderland, QPR and Hibernian before heading to Australia. All thoughts go out to him and his family, I think he has three children as well.

Several Irish internationals, as well as the wider footballing community, used social media to wish their former teammate well and express support for him as he battles the illness.

For Ireland, Miller earned 21 senior caps under Brian Kerr, Steve Staunton and Giovanni Trappatoni.

Ian Harte added: 'Very sad news about one of my old teammates Liam Miller, thinking of him and his family at this very hard time'.

"Awful news about Liam Miller keep the fingers crossed that he somehow pulls through", McManus tweeted.
