Free Amazon Prime Video? Amazon Might Have Something in the Works

Report: Amazon is Working on A FREE Ad-Supported Version of Prime Video

Despite showcasing its fair share of acclaimed shows, Amazon continues to lag behind Netflix in the war for streaming domination. Amazon is no stranger to cheaper ad-supported versions of many of its products - for example, you can score a cheaper Kindle that has ads on the its lockscreen but basically functions just like a regular ad-free Kindle.

A new report claims that Amazon is in fact developing a free ad-supported version of Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon has been increasingly producing its own original content, both movies and TV shows, and it has seen growing success for its efforts. Already sensing that they created a monster by taking large checks from SVOD services in exchange for their content, they are also locked in a struggle with MVPDs over the carriage of their networks in a world of cord-shaving and re-bundling.

Things are different this time around, however.

Considering most streaming services, at least the subscription-based paid ones offer an ad-free experience, it has hit the traditional TV market which runs on advertising.

On the programming front, of course, Amazon is going through a profoundly rocky period marked by multiple sexual harassment allegations and other misconduct that prompted the departure of Amazon Studios chief Roy Price, which was followed by the exit of other top execs. As part of its strategy to swoon content creators, Amazon may share audience information with them alongside ad revenue. That could change with the ad-supported Prime Video, according to the report.

Sources speaking to AdAge say Amazon is talking with companies about launching a free tier of Prime Video, one that will give viewers advertisements to compensate for the monthly rate.

As it is now, you have to subscribe to Amazon Prime to get access to Amazon Prime Video. The company's catalogue included content from the likes of Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony, and Disney, however; proving that content creators are interested in ad-supported models.
