The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback has been under fire for starting the national anthem protests that have taken the sports world by storm over the past year or so.

Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been named GQ's magazine's "Citizen of the Year" for his activism. Late-night host Stephen Colbert, actress Gal Gadot and Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant are also recognized in the issue.

"That's why we made a decision to photograph Colin in public, in Harlem, among the men, women, and children he is fighting for", the magazine's editors write. But he declined to provide quotes for the story itself, citing a desire to remain silent. Kaepernick began his protest as a way to call attention to systemic racial injustice and police brutality against black people, but in recent months, the kneeling gesture been co-opted as a general statement of protest against President Donald Trump.

Kaepernick took to social media on Monday morning to share the exciting cover, and while there is no shortage of haters on Twitter, the majority of responses to the magazine's choice of featuring him were overwhelmingly grateful. He became a free agent in March and has remained unsigned this season, which prompted him to recently file a collusion grievance against National Football League owners. Rapper J. Cole says Kaepernick "sacrificed his dream" to stand for something.
