Green Beret Killed After Discovering SEALs' Alleged Money Scheme

2 Navy SEALs Under Suspicion in Strangling of Green Beret in Mali

The Daily Beast reported over the weekend, citing five sources in the special ops community, that the SEALs under investigation had been pocketing money meant to fund an informant program.

U.S. Army Green Beret Logan Melgar was reportedly likely killed in Mali after discovering graft by two members of the famed Navy SEAL Team Six in early June, The Daily Beast reports.

Melgar was a member of the 3rd Special Forces Group, which is the primary unit responsible for Army special operations in northwest Africa, including Mali and Niger. The SEALS offered to cut him in, but Melgar declined, these sources said. However, things escalated to the point that Melgar ended up losing consciousness and eventually stopped breathing.

According to U.S. officials, he stopped breathing at around 5am and attempts to reopen his airway failed. However, officials say that Melgar's autopsy report showed no drugs or alcohol in his system, which pokes plenty of holes in the SEALs' accounts. He was rushed to a French clinic in Mali by another Green Beret and the two SEALs, but was already dead on arrival.

His body was found in a US Embassy Housing Room, the New York Times reported.

Authorities nearly immediately suspected foul play and have spent months investigating, The Times said.

The accused SEALs told their bosses Melgar had been drinking and died while practicing combat exercises, the Daily Beast stated. He notified Army Criminal Investigation Command of his suspicions and told commanders in Mali to preserve evidence related to the case. She also gave investigators the emails her husband sent her about the problems he was having with the two SEALs.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death remained secret until October 29, when the New York Times reported that NCIS took on the probe from AFRICOM on September 25. The two SEALs claimed Melgar was intoxicated during some impromptu sparring sessions in the Bamako compound, where Petty Officer Anthony E. DeDolph (a mixed martial arts pro, according to The Intercept) placed Melgar in a chokehold.

Melgar, who was from Lubbock, Texas, was just 34 years old when he died, and served two tours in Afghanistan. In 2016, he completed the Special Forces Qualification course.
