Security forces step up winter offensive against militants in Kashmir

Encounters ensued between militants and security forces at two places in south Kashmir early Tuesday morning, official sources said. Reportedly, the fighting started after holed-up militants fired at the team of Indian armed forces comprising of troops from the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operations Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). "He may have done some diploma course, but not BTech", the DIG said, adding that Mudasir had joined militancy in 2015. The police said that "the attack was repulsed and both the militants were killed".

Elsewhere, a gunfight is underway between militants and security forces in Lam area of neighbouring Pulwama district.

The slain militant, he said, was a B. Tech pass-out and was associated with Hizb.

They said the injured soldier later succumbed to injuries. "It was a search operation during which a hideout was busted", he told CNS.

Internet services have been snapped in south Kashmir and some parts of north Kashmir due to security reasons.

In Laan Tral of Pulwama, the gun battle broke out after security forces reached the area following a tip-off about militants hiding in the village. Railway services were disrupted in Kulgam and Anantnag.

An official said that CASO was launched in Lam forests last night after "specific inputs" about the presence of militants.
