'Karate kick' Evra leaves Marseille, banned until June 2018

Evra banned for rest of the season by UEFA after Marseille fan kick

Evra will miss the next seven months of competitive action after receiving the ban from UEFA Friday, the BBC reports.

The club confirmed that the former French global (pictured, center) would leave "by mutual consent" in a statement on Friday, minutes after European football's governing body UEFA announced the ban from their competitions.

Uefa announced that he has been banned from all European club games until June 30, 2018 and fined £8,829.

Evra was red carded before the start of Marseille's 1-0 Europa League defeat at Vitoria Guimaraes earlier this month after an altercation with a group of travelling fans during the warm-up that boiled over as he aimed a kick at a man's head.

That said, if (as seems likely) his contract with Marseille is terminated, he would be free to play outside of Europe until the suspension expires.

Marseille is well-known for having a powerful fan base that can exert pressure on the club and players alike.

And they have since confirmed that the player's contract has been terminated by mutual consent.

Marseille, who have also been fined €25,000 by UEFA and ordered to pay for damages caused by the club's fans to Guimaraes' ground within 30 days, reiterated that they intend to take action against the fans involved.

"This was unacceptable behaviour, from both the player and the supporters", he said to La Provence newspaper on Thursday.

Club president Jacques-Henri Eyraud added: "Today, there is sadness. Despite this incident, we are more than ever determined to demonstrate on and off the field that we are driven by the highest individual and collective demands".
