Kyrie Irving Frustrated with Clear Mask Worn in Win vs. Nets

Irving repeatedly wrestled with the mask Tuesday, fidgeting with the straps at times while dribbling up the court and removing it completely during nearly every dead-ball situation.

A masked version of Irving was pretty good, especially down the stretch.

As irksome as the clear plastic mask might be, Irving said it was better from a team perspective than the black one he wore in 2012 with the Cleveland Cavaliers to protect a broken jaw. It's nearly like having somewhat foggy blinders on. "The difference with the black mask is that (teammates are) not getting the ball because I couldn't see outside of my eyesight", he said.

"I did my absolute best not to cry in front of her", Irving said on Tuesday.

The All-Star point guard suffered a facial fracture in the first quarter against the Charlotte Hornets last Friday. He sat out Sunday when the Celtics beat Toronto for their 12th straight victory. That black mask, like, it just takes away your vision. "Hopefully, it'll get better in the next few weeks".

The pairing of Kyrie Irving and a protective mask is not a loving combination, to be sure. He watched as his teammates allowed the Nets to get within 82-81 in the opening minutes of the fourth before scoring 10 straight points. He then put the finishing touches on the win with a 22-foot pull-up jumper and a drive to the rim, giving the Celtics a 99-92 lead shortly after consecutive 3-pointer by Brooklyn's Allen Crabbe made it a four-point game.

And he thinks that without having to worry about James, Irving has been able to flourish.

"It sure looks like Boston is the team of the future in the East, with the assets that they still have and their young talent and their coaching, and Kyrie [Irving] is incredible", Kerr told reporters after practice on Tuesday, per ESPN's Chris Haynes.

The Brooklyn Nets held a "Hoops for Troops" night where they honored the men and women of the military who were in attendance for the team's game against the Boston Celtics at the Barclays Center. "Just finding his way and doing what he does, making big plays for us, coming through and sealing the game".
