Legionnaires' disease outbreak at Disneyland sickens nine visitors

Disneyland has shut down two cooling towers after people who visited the Anaheim theme park came down with Legionnaires' disease.

The towers were found to be contaminated with Legionella bacteria, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Case ages range from 52-94.

According to Good, during the week of October 20-26 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified Health Care Agency staff of the Legionnaire's disease cases that occurred in September. Ten of the 11 ill were hospitalized, and one person died. The person who died from the Disneyland problem had underlying health issues, according to health officials.

The county agency issued an order November 8 requiring Disney to take the towers out of service until they are shown to be free from contamination.

Of the 12 cases of Legionnaire's disease that emerged in September, nine were among people who visited Disneyland in September.

On Nov. 3, Disney informed the health agency that routine testing had detected elevated levels of Legionella bacteria in two cooling towers a month earlier.

Disney took the towers out of service again on Tuesday because the health agency required they remain down until test results verify they are free of Legionella contamination.

The towers are shut down as they are treated with chemicals that kill this type of bacteria.

Legionnaires' disease can be spread through inhaling droplets from contaminated water sources.

Health agency officials say the disease is becoming more common, citing 55 reports of Legionella disease in Orange County through October 2017, compared with 53 for the entire year of 2016 and 33 in 2015.

The park shared its information with the Orange County health experts, Hymel said, and "they have indicated there is no longer any known risk associated with our facilities".

It takes 2 to 10 days for symptoms of Legionnaires' disease to appear.
