The evening was opened by USA rapper Eminem, with a duet with Skylar Grey on the song Walk on Water.

The event was held in London's SSE Arena at Wembley on Sunday (12 November) only for the second time and was hosted by the British singer Rita Ora, who performed her new single Anywhere.

The previous Video Music Awards saw hip hop artist Kanye West leap on stage to interrupt an acceptance speech by Swift and argue that Beyonce was better. He received the awards for Biggest Fans, Best Song for "There's Nothing Holding Me Back", Best Artist and Best Canadian Act.

Singer Camila Cabello, who won the best-pop prize, performed "Havana" with a troupe of dancers dressed as bathing beauties around a realistic projection of a pool.

Talk of the night were London grime star Stormzy, who appeared on stage poking out of the sunroof of a police vehicle, and Travis Scott, who appeared while standing on what looked like a floating hawk.

Performers ranged across genres and generations, and included singer-songwriter Kesha, electronic act Clean Bandit, rapper French Montana, rockers The Killers and former One Direction heartthrob Liam Payne.

The best video, claimed by United States rapper Kendrick Lamar, was one of the few awards to be chosen by the MTV team. Frontman Jared Leto thanked Europe, adding that the U.S.is a land of immigrants and "we welcome you with open arms". These artists are returning to the honor of multiple nominations, but new artists like, Dua Lipa are on the rise taking the industry by storm earning their nominations in multiple categories as well.

"Their songs are prayers, their concerts a church", he said.

The Irish band dedicated the award to label boss Chris Blackwell of Island records, who signed them nearly 40 years ago.

U2 were crowned the Global Icon, with Bono singing a burst of Stormzy's "Blinded By Your Grace" as they collected the trophy.

The MTV Europe Music Awards are held in a different European city each year.
