AAA: More than 1.6 million Michiganders will celebrate Thanksgiving with holiday getaway

USA motorists will take 45.5 million trips this holiday, a 1.5 percent increase over past year and also the most since 2005, even though gas prices are at their highest since 2014, AAA said.

More than 50 million Americans will take to the skies, roads and rails during the Thanksgiving 2017 holidays between November 22 and November 26.

The 1.07 million Marylanders expected to travel between Wednesday and Sunday of the holiday weekend represents a 3.4 percent increase, the auto club said.

The Auto Club is expecting this years Thanksgiving holiday to be the busiest one in Southern California since 2007, with 3.87 million residents expected to get away for the long weekend.

A twist to holiday travel this year, is traveling on days other than the holiday itself. Nationally, 89 percent of travelers - 45.5 million - will go by vehicle, which is 3.2 percent higher than past year.

"When consumer confidence is high, more people are willing to travel, even if it means taking on debt". Air travel is expected to increase about 6 percent, with over 128,000 Michiganders flying to their holiday destinations.

A year ago, AAA says, the average price was $1.91 a gallon.

The vast majority-nearly 90 percent-of MI holiday travelers will drive this Thanksgiving.

California gas prices have skyrocketed in the last two weeks to their highest levels in more than two years and are likely to remain above $ 3.20 on average in most areas throughout the holiday weekend.

"Although some people may adjust food expenses or other line items in their travel budget, we don't expect fuel prices to stop people from visiting friends and family this Thanksgiving". AAA has been reporting on holiday travel trends for more than two decades.
