North Korean Guards Shoot Fellow Soldier as He Defects

S. Korean Navy, 3 US Carriers to Conduct Joint Drill

North Korea complained to the United Nations on Monday about joint military exercises by the United State and South Korea, describing it as "the worst ever situation" because USA nuclear war equipment had been deployed ready to strike.

South Korean guards, who were alerted by gunshots, found the North Korean soldier about 55 yards south of Panmunjom, the New York Times reported. South Korea was keeping its "full combat readiness against North Korea's possibility provocations", its military said Monday.

He is now under questioning by the South's police, army and spy agency.

It said there was no exchange of gunfire between South and North Korea.

North Korea is often described as a Communist state, but its official ideology is Juche, or "self-reliance", a political system that blends nationalism and Marxist economics. Those drills, set to end Tuesday, were aimed at sending a strategic warning to North Korea, officials said.

The most famous incident was in 1976, when two American army officers were killed by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers.

"Do not underestimate us", Trump said. "This would be a fatal miscalculation".

The presence of the three-carrier flotilla in Pacific waters is seen as a signal to North Korea that the United States will not be intimidated by Pyongyang's continued testing of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. But the U.S. now has seven aircraft carriers at sea and brought three of them together to put on a show of force no other nation on earth could possibly stage. The US has around 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea.

About 30,000 North Koreans have defected to South Korea since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, but majority travel through China.

The carriers are required to meet up in the Sea of Japan during the week off the Korean Peninsula, according to a USA defense official. All three "reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining maximum pressure on North Korea in an effort to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula", the White House said.
