Tim Piazza death investigation: Prosecutor announces new charges

Piazza, an engineering student from Lebanon, New Jersey, died on February 4 after consuming a risky amount of alcohol and suffering fatal injuries when he tumbled down flights of stairs.

She declined Monday to detail if the deleted video shows Piazza falling down the steps, but said he does appear inebriated in the video. Authorities based the new charges on the Beta Theta Pi basement surveillance footage deleted by a fraternity member following the 19-year-old's death.

The video was reportedly erased after the fraternity brothers found out that an investigation into Piazza's death was underway and police planned to obtain the footage.

The new tape led Centre County's district attorney, Stacy Parks Miller, to announce additional criminal charges against frat members as a result of the investigation into deleted surveillance video from February 2 when Timothy J. Piazza participated in a hazing ritual.

Piazza participated in a booze-fueled hazing ritual at the fraternity in 2017, then later tumbled into the basement and hit his head - but the brothers waited 12 hours before calling an ambulance. The most serious charges against the Penn State students, including involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and simple assault were all dismissed.

Numerous charges the district attorney brought earlier this year had been dismissed, and one lawyer said he was outraged that his client would have to defend himself again.

The Beta Theta Pi house was shut down shortly after Piazza's death and remains empty.

"Guess what, guys. Now we know", Piazza said.

The judge has allowed the lesser charges to stand, including hazing and providing alcohol to minors.

"Not every tragedy is a crime", he added.

Piazza's father, James Piazza, noted that witnesses and several accused members repeatedly claimed they didn't know what else happened to Tim "beyond what was seen in the upstairs video".

Piazza's parents, Jim and Evelyn, had spoken out vigorously before the hearing about the manner in which their son died, saying the fraternity brothers had treated their son like "roadkill". "Instead, he was killed". We have spent the past eight months wondering - how can this happen on the campus of Penn State?
