Rancho California school shooting: Five dead after 'random', drive-by attacks

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are seen behind yellow crime scene tape outside Rancho Tehama Elementary School after a shooting in the morning on November 14, 2017, in Rancho Tehama, California Four people were killed and almost a dozen were wounded, including several children, when a gunman went on a rampage at multiple locations, including a school in rural northern California.

"I know of at least three deaths".

Local media reports the as yet unnamed shooter is "well known" to local police, who have been called to his address at least six times in the past year over reports of gunshots and open fires.

One student at the elementary school was hit by gunfire and transported to the local hospital for treatment, Johnston said. No students are thought to have been killed in the incident. The building was evacuated and students moved to a safe location, police said.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston stated that the shooter was "randomly picking targets".

The FBI has confirmed it will assist in the investigation. Johnston said there were more than 100 officers helping cover the multiple scenes.

Authorities said the shooting occurred around 8 a.m.in Rancho Tehama, near Red Bluff, Calif., about 120 miles northwest of Sacramento.

A gunman crashed through a fence at Rancho Tehama Elementary School early Tuesday morning, just minutes before school started, and started spraying bullets.

A witness told KCRA-TV that his truck was stolen and his roommate was shot and killed by the suspect.

Johnston said that a greater tragedy was averted due to the quick thinking of school officials.

"We've made it aware that this guy has been insane and he's been threatening us", the man said.

A person with the username Javier Figueroa tweeted that the shooting had taken place at his brother's school.

Gov. Jerry brown issued a statement on the shooting, saying: "Anne and I are saddened to hear about today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren. We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones and unite with all Californians in grief".
