Scientists have found that emotions cause different types of alcohol

Men, on the other hand, were more likely to experience aggression with any type of alcohol. "This global study suggests even today consuming spirits is more likely to result in feelings of aggression than other drinks", said study co-author Professor Mark Bellis of Public Health Wales' Director of Policy, Research and International Development.

"Alcoholic beverages vary in the types of emotions individuals report they elicit, with spirits more frequently eliciting emotional changes of all types".

The most relaxing drinks were red wine and beer, with 52.8 per cent of the respondents saying that beer boosted relaxation. "People might drink to feel more confident or relaxed but they also risk other negative emotional responses too".

The study doesn't offer any insight into why different alcoholic drinks make people feel differently.

The study, was led by experts at Bangor University and King's College London, found red wine was likely to make people feel sexy and relaxed - but also exhausted and tearful.

The findings showed that men were significantly more likely to associate feelings of aggression with all types of alcohol, as were those categorised as heavy/dependent drinkers, who were six times more likely to do so than low risk drinkers.

One third of respondents to the study were female, with the researchers noting that women were more likely than men to report each emotion as a result of drinking a single type of alcohol.

And 59% of spirit drinkers reported feelings of confidence compared to 45% of beer drinkers and just over a quarter of wine drinkers.

Wine officially makes people feel sexier than beer – but only until they get tired
Wine makes you feel sexy… but you might be too tired to do anything

The study found that 42% of people said they felt sexy after drinking spirits, while just 25% of red wine, 24% of white wine and only 19% of beer drinkers felt the same way.

Almost two thirds of people said they linked red wine to feeling exhausted, while white wine was the tipple least often linked to tearfulness, with only 10 percent saying they associated it with becoming weepy.

It is worth also bearing in mind that there are compounds apart from alcohol in different drinks.

"Although these are part of the difference in taste between drinks little consideration has been given to what other effects they may have on the drinker".

RG: How do you hope your results will be used? .

Researchers say the emotions people feel when drinking could, in fact, be linked to their tipple of choice.

Bellis: There is plenty of promotional material that pushes the positive emotions people might look for from drinking, but it is important to understand the negative ones as well. Health professionals have often focused on links between alcohol and cancer, liver disease, and cardiovascular disease. We hope that the results can help understand and prevent unsafe spirals where some people see drinking as the solution to emotional problems that it is actually aggravating.
