"Once again, Myanmar's military is trying to sweep serious violations against the Rohingya under the carpet", AI's Director of Southeast Asia and Pacific James Gomez said. It denied that security forces had torched Rohingya villages or used "excessive force". "They never shot at the innocent Bengalis", said the army's post, which claimed to have collected the accounts of 804 witnesses.

Aung Htay Myint said the two nations will discuss the policy to repatriate Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh and sign a memorandum of understanding when Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali visits Myanmar on November 19.

"Who could have predicted that if more than 600,000 people were fleeing from a brutal army for fear of their lives, the woman who many of us believed would have the clearest and loudest voice on the crisis would go quiet", the band said in a statement.

The military campaign drew criticism from various organisations which denounced the authorities' numerous abuses against civilians, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights described the situation as an "ethnic cleansing".

With no one left to work Maungdaw's fields, huge swathes of verdant farmland are at risk of rotting - a cruel irony given the severe food shortages in aid-dependent Rakhine and the squalid refugee camps across the border.

Myanmar has recently been accused of ethnic cleansing as scores of Rohingya people have fled the country amid reported attacks by the military. Picture taken on November 12, 2017.

In a report on Monday, the military said it had "abided by laws" during the "security operations" in northern Rakhine state, prompting worldwide rights groups to clan that it is whitewashing ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity targeting the Rohingya.

"The Burmese authorities have once again shown that they can't and won't credibly investigate themselves", Adams added.

Human rights groups poured scorn on Tuesday on a Tatmadaw investigation into alleged atrocities against Rohingya Muslims, branding it a "whitewash" and calling for United Nations and independent investigators to be allowed into Burma.

Nevertheless, Burma has denied access to a specially created United Nations fact-finding mission as well as many global humanitarian organisations to operate in affected areas of the Rakhine.

Tillerson and Aung San Suu Kyi, the head of a less than two-year-old civilian administration that has no control over the military, met in Manila on Monday, where they were both attending a regional summit.

"We could not find the death of any Muslim", added Win Htein, who has been deemed the "godfather" of Suu Kyi's political party, the National League for Democracy.

A growing list of prominent global figures have criticised Suu Kyi's response to the crisis including the Dalai Lama, Pope Francis, and several fellow Nobel laureates such as Malala Yousafzai and Desmond Tutu.

The media trip to Rakhine comes amid mounting global pressure on Myanmar over its handling of the crisis, with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson set to visit the capital on Wednesday.
