Alibaba hit $5 billion in transactions in less than 15 minutes on Singles Day, blowing the opening minutes of past years for the one-day shopping event out of the water. For which we can thank Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

The shopping day raked in an impressive $17.8 billion, and this year has some wild offers including a lifetime supply of alcohol for $1,673.

Other sources confirm that 97 percent of sales made on the site in the first 30 seconds were from mobile devices.

Alibaba's sales topped $10 billion after an hour and six minutes. The holiday derives its name from the date it takes place on, 11/11.

US singer and producer Pharrell Williams, British pop star Jessie J and other celebrities will help launch this year's November 11 "Singles' Day", Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba said.

To put this year's sales in perspective, it took Alibaba almost five minutes (or more than twice as long) to hit $1 billion in sales on Singles Day in 2016. "It's the opportunity for consumers to explore and find new brands and new products".
