Charles Manson, the once charismatic leader of a 1960s cult embroiled in a series of high-profile murders is reportedly on death's door.

According to TMZ, Manson was rushed to a Bakersfield hospital three days ago, where he is undergoing treatment and is under guard by five uniformed police officers.

A KGET viewer said they saw the 83-year-old Manson at Mercy Hospital in Downtown Bakersfield. 'It's just a matter of time'.

"It's not going to get any better for him", a source with knowledge of the situation told TMZ.

Manson was hospitalized with serious health issues in January. TMZ reported that he had been having a bout of severe intestinal bleeding and needed surgery to fix a lesion, but doctors deemed him too weak for the procedure.

By the time he changed his mind and was ready for the operation, doctors determined he was too weak for surgery, and he was sent back to jail.

Charles Manson was the head of the cult known as The Manson Family.

The following night the Family butchered small business owners Leno and Rosemary La Bianca, in their home in Los Angeles.

Manson, Atkins, Krenwinkle and Van Houten were convicted of murder and initially sentenced to death for the killings. All of his parole petitions ended with officials denying his release.

She was heavily pregnant at the time.

In prison, Manson was granted permission in 2014 to Wednesday then 26-year-old Afton Elaine Burton, described in United States media as a slender brunette, who had been visiting him. Manson took the phrase from the Beatles' song of the same name.
