Trump asks China's Xi to intervene in case of arrested UCLA players

The UCLA basketball team is heading back to Los Angeles without three players arrested on shoplifting charges in China, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Saturday.

"After Trump raised the matter, Xi promised to look into the case and ensure that the players are treated fairly and expeditiously, said a US official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation", the Post reported.

Trump talked to Xi about the arrests during a state visit last week to Beijing, part of the president's five-nation Asian trip, The Washington Post reported. Sources told ESPN that the three could remain in China for another week or two.

Surveillance video of the players appeared to show them shoplifting from stores inside of the high-end shopping complex including Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.

According to a report over the weekend from ESPN, the players could be in China for another week or two, dependent upon how quickly the legal process can be resolved. This official indicated that charges against the players have been reduced and that the case is proceeding toward a resolution.

Police arrived early Tuesday morning at the Hyatt Regency in Hangzhou, where both UCLA and Georgia Tech were staying ahead of their matchup in Shanghai.

Donald Trump is trying to do what the UCLA men's basketball team couldn't do: take its Ball and go home. That LiAngelo Ball is the brother of Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball, of the now famous basketball family of patriarch Lavar Ball, has only increased interest. Neither made any mention of the UCLA players' arrests.
