Two Week Firearms Surrenders Starts In East Anglia

Fortnight-long firearms amnesty begins on November 13

Fortnight-long firearms amnesty begins on November 13

Police in England and Wales have begun a two-week gun surrender in an attempt to reduce the number of firearms on the streets, after a 27 percent rise in gun crime in the United Kingdom previous year.

He said intelligence-led operations have smashed a number of gun-running rings, such as the one in Kent which brought in 31 Skorpion sub-machine guns, the same weapon used during the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

"The more firearms and ammunition out of harm's way helps us keep our communities safe, avoids the risk of them getting into the wrong hands and the possibility of them being used in crime".

The service said that many firearms are kept by people "in innocence and ignorance of their illegality".

A two-week nationwide gun amnesty launches today, with members of the public given the chance to surrender firearms and ammunition without being punished.

Some of the weapons handed it to Suffolk Constabulary headquarters as part of a surrender.

"By participating in the surrender, people can be confident that items have been safely disposed of".

Commander Jane Gyeford, of the City of London Police, said on Monday, November 13, she hoped people would take advantage of the surrender to hand in weapons which were in their possession.

People who take their firearms and ammunition to police stations across the United Kingdom in the next two weeks will not face any criminal charges.

Detective Chief Insp Rayland added: "I'd like to clarify that this is a firearms surrender and not a general firearms amnesty for the lifetime of the firearm; an amnesty will be granted for police possession of an item only at the point of handover (surrender)".

During the surrender, firearms can be deposited at Malinsgate and Shrewsbury police stations.

Illegal possession of a gun can lead to five years in prison and if found guilty of possession with intent to supply a life sentence can be faced.

Firearms and ammunition must not be left outside any police building if it is closed, nor handed in before or after the surrender period.

Officers recognise that many firearms can be held innocently or overlooked and forgotten about in people's homes.

"Thankfully, gun crime in Durham is very low and I would like to reassure the public that the surrender is not being held due to any recent increase in such offences".

"Similarly, possession of a knife carries up to a four-year sentence, with the risk of a lifetime in jail should you use it and fatally injure someone".

"The surrender provides the ideal opportunity to safely dispose of these weapons and to prevent them from ending up on the streets and falling into criminals hands, which only brings destruction and devastation to our communities".

Launching the drive in the Northwest, Detective Chief Superintendent Mary Doyle, of Greater Manchester Police, said the public should be anxious about the supply of guns on the UK's streets.

Anyone with any information regarding the use of firearms, weapons or suspicious activity can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Anyone handing an item in is advised to call 101 and notify police of the time and station they will be attending.
