US Military: Drone Strike Kills More Than 100 Al-Shabab in Somalia

The United States military has confirmed that over 100 Islamist militants were killed in an airstrike launched against the al-Shabaab group in Somalia.

It is the latest development in Trump's strategy of expanding military commanders' authority in the battle against jihadis in Africa.

The U.S. Africa Command conducted a total of 15 strikes in the whole of 2016.

"Al-Shabaab has pledged allegiance to al Qaeda and is dedicated to providing safe haven for terrorist attacks throughout the world", Africom said in a statement that has been used in the past as the United States ramps up airstrikes in the country.

Several weeks ago the Pentagon confirmed that U.S. air strikes had killed 40 Al Shabaab members in a number of assaults carried out over several days as part of a policy to step up operations against the group.

Somalia has been the scene of deadly clashes between government forces and al-Shabab since 2006.

USA officials are also concerned about a growing presence of the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group in the country, and a potential influx of ISIS fighters into the country as the group loses territory in Iraq and Syria.

The Takfiri militant group was forced out of the capital by the African Union troops in 2011 but still controls parts of the countryside and carries out attacks against government, military and civilian targets seemingly at will in Mogadishu and regional towns.

Al-Shabab has increasingly stepped up its operations with several high-profile terrorist attacks.

Al-Shabab is blamed for last month's truck bombing in Mogadishu that killed more than 350 people.
