Uber admits covering up data breach

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi

This NPC's invite comes after Uber Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi revealed Wednesday (Tuesday in the United States) the company suffered a massive data breach in 2016, but only reported it now.

NY law requires that companies notify the Attorney General and consumers if data is stolen.

Normally, in a situation like this, Uber would notify the public and law enforcement, however, they chose a different course.

Uber should comply with formal breach notification procedures outlined in the Data Privacy Act of 2012 or Republic Act.

The episode apparently took place late previous year.

His successor has been left to clean up the mess.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", he added. While I can't erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes. It believes no trip location histories, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, or dates of birth were compromised.

Multiple regulators in Europe earlier already vowed to start an investigation, with Italy's data protection chief speaking of an "obvious lack of adequate security measures" at the ride-hailing company.

So Uber is likely to have breached state laws by concealing the breach for so long.

Representative Frank Pallone Jr (N.J.), the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, also called on the FTC to investigate the Uber breach on Wednesday, according to The Hill. "We are changing the way we do business". The stolen information included names, email addresses and phone numbers of 57 million Uber users around the world, and the names and license numbers of 600,000 USA drivers, according to a blog post by Uber's new chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, who replaced co-founder Travis Kalanick as CEO in August. The board removed Kalanick as CEO in June.

In addition, while the USA does not now have a federal law requiring companies to inform the public about data breaches, the vast majority of states have enacted breach notification statutes of their own - which are typically a lot stricter than a full year's time for disclosure. Attorneys general in at least four USA states, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts and NY, said they had launched investigations into the breach.

"If Uber did indeed secretly pay-off the hackers to keep the breach quiet, then a possible cover up of the incident is problematic and must be investigated", Pallone said in a statement.

But those factors, he says, don't determine a defendant's potential liability to victims of the breach.

"Companies get punished for that", Rubin said. "We are closely evaluating the serious issues raised". Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-N.J.), ranking member of the House Commerce Committee.

While no financial details appear to have been compromised in the breach, the fact that Uber tried to hide its details to its customers, employees and especially the authorities raises a great deal of concern regarding the company's ethics and how it manages sensitive data.
