Use antibiotics effectively to reduce drug-resistance

"Students at BYU-Idaho are partly involved in solving this antibiotic crisis by searching for new antibiotics in the soil around campus", Kelson said.

On November 7, 2017, World Health Organization issued a statement recommending that farmers and the food industry stop using antibiotics routinely to promote growth and prevent disease in healthy animals.

Since they were first marketed in the 1940s, antibiotics have helped to revolutionize modern healthcare, offering cures to previously untreatable infections. It also shows the number of people experiencing drug-resistant infections decreases further when infection control measures, such as good hand hygiene, are followed.

The WHO said their guidelines contribute directly to the aims of the Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2015 and the Declaration of the High-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Antimicrobial Resistance, adopted in 2016.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, the commemorations are running from today until Friday under the theme: Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before taking antibiotics.

"We are misusing antibiotics by using them when it is not needed (for the common cold or viral infection), not completing the prescribed dose and using them to promote growth and productivity in agriculture", Stegelmeier said.

The issue is a concern to health agencies around the world as growing numbers of infections - such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, and salmonella - are becoming harder to treat as the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective. The session will be held outside of the hospital's cafeteria on Tuesday, November 14th from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m.

"We always try to have an antibiotic that we can treat an infection with", says Cloud. Antibiotic Awareness Week is an annual one-week observance to raise awareness of the threat of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic prescribing and use.

Among the WHO's the highest priority antibiotics are quinolones, 3rd and higher generation cephalosporins, macrolides and ketolides, glycopeptides and polymyxins (also known as colistin).
