India, as member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999 that came into force from September 15, 2003.

GIs are signs used on products that possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. "We are very happy and proud that Bengal has been granted GI status for Rosogolla", Banerjee tweeted.

"On the location of Rosogolla Bhawan stood the sweet-meat shop run by Nabin Chandra Das".

The fight got so intense that the Odisha government even set up three committees to look into matters relating to the origin rasgulla. And since then this famous sweet became news for everyone across India.

The battle between West Bengal and Odisha over the origin of Rosogolla ended on a sweet note for West Bengal with the State winning the Geographical Indication (GI) for this iconic sweet.

Countering Odisha's claim, the Bengal government applied for GI tag for the sweet, asserting there was "ample" documentary evidence to prove the sweet belongs to Bengal. We are all so happy. Virtually every dignitary visiting West Bengal - from Fidel Castro to Diego Maradona - was offered this signature sweet during state dinners. Now with this Geographical Indication now rosogolla belongs to Bengal, not Odisha.

The development comes mere days after a minister from the state had apparently said it would drag Odisha - the other state who lays claim to what it calls Rasagola - to court in order to get recognised as the birthplace of this delicious food item.

It is this kind of Rasagolla that has received the GI tag. The GI tag was finally conferred on Tuesday. Now the day of celebration for West Bengal is here after the win over rosogolla origin.
