Eight suspects arrested in assassination of Panama Papers journalist

Eight people have been arrested in Malta over the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, after her auto exploded.

Galizia had been outspoken in her criticism of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, whose inner circle she alleged was receiving money from the ruling family of Azerbaijan.

The eight suspects were arrested under "reasonable suspicion in connection with the involvement of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia", who was killed in a auto bomb blast in October, Muscat told reporters.

All of the suspects are Maltese nationals, Muscat said.

Police have 48 hours to interrogate the suspects and decide whether to prosecute.

"During this operation, 8 persons were arrested" the statement said, adding that they faced "reasonable suspicion in connection with involvement in the murder" of Caruana Galizia.

Galizia's death prompted a series of demonstrations on the island, with many on the island nation criticizing the ruling class for not doing enough to catch her killers.

"As I stated as soon as I learnt about this barbaric act, we will leave no stone unturned to get this case solved", he said.

Only two days ago, MEPs sent to the island to examine the investigation said they were "seriously concerned" about the rule of law on the island, and were leaving "even more worried", the Guardian reported.

'There are crooks everywhere you look now.

The force of the blast reduced her vehicle to pieces and catapulted the journalist's body into a nearby field, witnesses said.

A significant part of that had involved exposing what the massive Panama Papers data leak revealed about corruption at the highest levels of Maltese government.

She is survived by her lawyer husband, Peter, and three sons.
