Apple's iPhone app of the year is Calm, a health-and-fitness app that provides soundtracks and guides for meditation, including routines to help you sleep. Apple says the title "radiates imagination and originality". It has also announced most popular apps, music, movies and more ... First of all, the introduction of AR (augmented reality) apps and games picked up pace this year, second they point out is the rise of real-time competitive gaming, third is the growing popularity of lifestyle apps (like Zomato or Big Basket), and finally increase in popularity of apps enabling photo and video editing.

Apple's iPhone game of the year is Splitter Critters, a creative and cute puzzler in which players navigate the game's two dimensional world by ripping it apart and pasting it back together. While game and app picks can also be viewed on the respective Games and Apps front pages, it's in the Today tab that Apple was able to put higher emphasis on each victor and tell the story behind it.

Apple has also released the usual top charts listings for free and paid apps and games. You can see the full U.S. list here.

The free iPhone apps top 10 reads like a checklist of obvious downloads, with Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger all featuring, along with Bitmoji - highlighting just how popular emoji-based conversation has become.

iOS apps are not only limited to the iPhone as Apple also took the time to list the best selling apps on their iPad tablet.

For Apple Music, the most popular album was Drake's More Life and Ed Sheeran snagged the most popular song with Shape of You. Apple said Taylor Swift's new album Reputation has already reached No. 3 on the 2017 U.S. top album chart, an impressive feat considering it was just released on November 10.

A Star Wars Story and Wonder Woman were 2017's top three films in both iTunes and the Play Store. Game of Thrones unsurprisingly dominated in the TV realm, with NPR's Fresh Air topping podcast charts.
