Christine Keeler, the former model at the centre of the Profumo affair that shook British politics in the 1960s, has died aged 75, her family and a close friend have said.

Her son, Seymour Platt, told the Guardian: "My mother passed away last night at about 11.30pm", on Tuesday.

Keeler had since slid into obscurity and and for years lived either at Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, or at a dingy flat in Chelsea.

Front-page revelations that she was also having an affair with a Soviet naval attache, Yevgeny Ivanov, titillated the public and shone a light on the social and sexual mores of Britain's secretive ruling establishment.

Eventually, after more newspaper stories emerged, he admitted lying to the house, and resigned from the cabinet and the Commons.

The Profumo affair also dealt a serious blow to the Conservative government of Harold Macmillan, which lost the subsequent 1964 election to the Labor Party.

"I don't think she ever got away from it - that was a tragedy". She had led a humble lifestyle after the scandal but never escaped the notoriety it brought her.

It even added an expression to the British lexicon.

Born in Uxbridge, Middlesex, and raised by her mother and stepfather, Keeler was working as a cabaret dancer in London's Soho when she met Stephen Ward, an osteopath, artist and "man about town".

"Well, he would, wouldn't he?", responded Mandy Rice-Davies. She would stand up against anybody she thought was doing the wrong thing.

In later life, Keeler had regrets about how the scandal unfolded and said she had been a victim. I can't think of anyone else who has had three musicals written about her, and several plays, and is seldom out of the news, for one reason or another. She became famous for her controversial involvement with war minister John Profumo, which eventually led to his resignation.
