Former BSO Conductor Being Investigated for Sexual Abuse

The Metropolitan Opera announced Saturday (Dec 2) it would investigate claims that its music director sexually abused a teenage boy decades ago, as the USA avalanche of misconduct allegations spread to classical music.

"We are deeply disturbed by the news articles that are being published online today about James Levine", said the Metropolitan Opera in NY, where Levine holds the role Music Director Emeritus.

The New York Post reported Saturday that the IL victim, now 48, filed a report with the Lake Forest police department last October explicitly detailing several instances of sexual abuse by Levine, beginning in 1985 when the boy was 15 at the Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest and continuing for years afterward.

The accusations came nine years after the statute of limitations on a possible child sex crime in IL had expired, but police investigated anyway and submitted findings to the Lake County State's Attorney. General Manager Peter Gelb told the Times that though the investigation is launching now, the Met had been aware of the police report when it was made in October 2016.

Police have indicated to the NY Post that the case is under review anyway but no charges have been brought at this stage.

The Met said in a statement: "This first came to the Met's attention when the IL police investigation was opened in October 2016".

The Ravinia Festival created a new post for Levine as conductor laureate, which is to become effective in 2018.

However, Mr Levine had denied the accusations and the Met had heard nothing further from police, the newspaper added.

The Met tweeted on Saturday evening that it was "deeply disturbed by the news" about Levine and announced their investigation with "outside resources to determine whether charges of sexual misconduct in the 1980s are true, so that we can take appropriate action". "Now I can", the paper quoted him as telling police.

"I began seeing a 41-year-old man when I was 15, without really understanding I was really "seeing" him", the Post quoted the alleged victim as saying in a written statement to police. He was trying to seduce me. "Now I can", the man has said. I couldn't see this.

The alleged victim said the encounters continued until 1993, some of them taking place in NY, and that Levine gave him $50,000 in cash over the years, the Post said. Levine, it was said, had had a relationship with a boy whose parents had gone to the Met board, threatening to expose the situation.

Towards the end of his career he struggled with Parkinson's disease and other health issues and conducted from a motorised wheelchair.
