The case relates to the birth of twins (a boy and a girl) on November 30.

Shortly after twins were born prematurely at a hospital in New Delhi, India, doctors in charge of their care determined that one of the boys was stillborn, while the other was put on life support and declared dead shortly thereafter.

The boy's uncle Deepak said, "Yesterday, the doctors told us he was critical and around 12:30 p.m. today, they told us he was no more".

According to The Hindustran Times, the boy's father, Ashish Kumar, alleged the doctors who helped his wife deliver the babies requested Rs 50 lakh - about 75 cents in Dollars - to keep the baby alive, and another Rs 35,000 - about $540 in USD - to sustain the chances of his wife's survival.

After the hospital's negligence became evident, the Delhi-based hospital terminated the services of two doctors involved in the declaration of a 22-week-old premature baby as dead while he was alive.

A three-member doctor panel submitted the preliminary report in Shalimar Bagh Max Super Specialty Hospital medical negligence issue to Delhi health minister Satyendra Jain. The police had registered a case against the Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh. They opened the bag to find the live child.

Just before their last rites, the family discovered that the baby boy was breathing, the police said. Ashish said physicians demanded extra money to improve the chances of keeping the baby and mother alive. "We rushed the baby to a nearby nursing home in Pitampura", the father said.

The statement said a detailed enquiry was initiated, pending which, the concerned doctor was asked to proceed on leave immediately and they were in constant touch with the parents and are providing all the needed support.

Earlier, NDTV reported that no ECG was done on the infant to check whether he is alive or not.
