'Deadlines for Linking Aadhaar with Bank A/C, PAN, SIM Valid'

Supreme Court on 30 October had said that a Constitution Bench would commence hearing on the clutch of petitions against Aadhaar scheme from the last week of November

The Attorney General said that in respect of 131 services, a notification would be issued.

26 Nov 2017, the top court had said that it would hear the petitions after its constitution bench concludes hearing the Delhi-Centre governance dispute. Recently, it was also reported that the mobile connections not linked to Aadhaar card will get deactivated. The extension will only be given to those who don't have Aadhaar card as yet.

As the Aadhaar issue was placed before the Apex Court, the Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it is willing to extend till 31st March next year the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar to avail various services and benefits of government schemes. On June 1, 2017, PML Rules have been amended to make Aadhaar mandatory for linking all bank accounts, insurance, pension, mutual funds and DMAT accounts.

The Central government has previously made Aadhaar card mandatory for carrying out nearly all the legal tasks in the country. Other services that would require Aadhaar include mobile phones and banking services. To begin with, one can e-verify their income tax return using their Aadhaar once it's linked it to the SIM card.

Citizens are required to link their 12-digit unique identification number with government services, PAN cards, mobile numbers and bank accounts.

While the deadline for linking mobile numbers with Aadhaar will not be extended beyond the February 6, as it has already been accepted by the top court, the fresh March 31 deadline also comes with conditions.

The court said the plea for interim relief would be heard next week after the Aadhaar matter was mentioned by senior counsel P.B. Suresh who appeared for lead petitioner Justice K.S. Puttuswamy - a former judge of the Karnataka High Court.
