"This week we had the long range missile, ICBM launch, which again gathered the attention of the world and we feel that it needs to be discussed", Bessho said at a news conference.

North Korean state media declared that the missile launched earlier this week marks a major development of its "state nuclear force" and that the missile was a "super-large heavy warhead, which is capable of striking the whole mainland of the U.S".

United Nations Security Council ministers will meet on December 15 to discuss North Korea's nuclear and missiles programs and the body will also meet separately this month to discuss human rights abuses in the North Asian country, an annual meeting that its ally China has tried to prevent for the past three years.

North Korea under previous sanctions resolutions is banned from conducting such tests but has continued to fire off a succession of missiles, some of which have flown over Japan, and conducted its sixth nuclear test in September.

As the only nation to suffer a nuclear attack in World War II, he said Japan feels very strongly that North Korea's nuclear program needs to be stopped.

President Donald Trump remains committed to the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, McMaster said, adding that there were non-military ways to deal with the issue, such as calling on China to impose greater economic sanctions against Pyongyang, reports CNN.

"We're asking China not to do us or anybody else a favor", he said.

He added that it's important for the USA and the global community to work together to convince the North Korean leader that pursuing nuclear capabilities is a "dead end" for both him and his regime. The 5-day drill, dubbed Vigilant Ace, will involve more than 230 warplanes from both sides, including 6 U.S. F-22 Raptors, and 6 F-35s - some of the air forces' most advanced fighter jets.

"We are trying in the Security Council to find a way to make (North Korea) change its policy and that is a role we play here and that is the role that I will be playing as president of the Security Council".

North Korean officials made similar comments last month.

With every missile launch or nuclear test, Kim has improved his country's capabilities, McMaster said. It was North Korea's most powerful weapons test yet.

The president's incendiary language has stoked concern among some security experts and former officials that it, coupled with the joint military exercises, could lead to the USA stumbling into conflict.
