Google Removes Chrome Apps From Web Store, Shifting To Progressive Web Apps

Google Formally Shuts Down ‘Apps’ Section on Chrome Web Store

As announced earlier Search Engine Giant Google has shut down the Chrome Apps web Store all platforms. The company explained that it made a decision to shutter apps from the Chrome browser simply because not a lot of people were actually using them. Well, almost a year-and-half later Google has completed the job and now, Chrome browser will not be able to access or install any apps from the store.

Google told developers via email the Chrome team is working to enable Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) that can be installed on the desktop. Both app categories will now be accessible only on Chrome OS and not the desktop. People who use Chrome just for web surfing will be able to download extensions and themes. What's more, Google confirmed that its PWA's wouldn't be able to offer the full range of capabilities that Chrome Apps can, but said it was "investigating" ways to make the transition easier for developers whose apps are reliant on the pre-existing Chrome APIs.

Google has shut down the "Apps" section of the Chrome Web Store as it pushes for Progressive Web Apps.

The Chrome browser will continue to load packaged and hosted apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux beyond the previously announced deprecation timeline.

A big news is that Google is going to replace Chrome App with PWAs on desktop system. Google expects that PWAs will be available on desktops come mid-2018. Chromebooks are already capable of running some Android apps and apps on the Chrome browser would seem redundant. PWAs can work across multiple browsers even on mobile devices, and can deliver an app-like experience to desktop websites.

If it sounds complicated, you can check out the Google Support documentation which takes you through setting up and using Chrome Remote Desktop on your Windows, Mac or Linux PC or Chromebook.

Progressive Web Apps are not Chrome-specific.
