Clifford, who was hired in May 2013 and owns a 160-168 career record after leading the organization to the playoffs in 2014 and 2016, missed Monday night's win over the Magic.

The Charlotte Hornets announced Wednesday that Steve Clifford would be away from the team "for the immediate future" for health-related reasons.

Silas typically shares the scouting for the other 29 teams around the league with our assistant coaches, something that SB Nation's Paul Flannery witnessed when he spent a day with the assistant coach.

The team made the announcement Wednesday in a release. So the 56-year old Clifford may be dealing with an illness and a relatively short absence, or something more severe than that vague term that will never be fully known.

Clifford has battled heart problems in the past, but a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the issue was not a heart-related.

Hornets representatives said they had no further comment out of respect for Clifford's privacy.

Silas will continue to coach the team with Clifford out.
