Talks to Avoid a Shutdown Are Back On Reuters

"This is a waste of time", she said.

"We're having a conversation with our members about what we think the best way forward is", he told reporters.

Spokesmen for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Paul Ryan say the Republicans focused on the need to reach a long-term funding agreement that provides adequate resources for the military. He blamed Democrats, saying they want "illegal immigrants pouring into our country, bringing with them crime, tremendous amounts of crime". They say the discussions on immigration should be part of a separate process.

Pelosi emphasized that Democrats don't want to see a government shutdown, but couldn't support Thursday's bill because it doesn't include their priorities like protections for young immigrants, funding for the opioid crisis and relief for communities affected by recent natural disasters.

Republicans, who hold a 240-193 advantage in the House, were nevertheless able to pass the bill, with 14 Democrats joining the majority to vote "yea".

Those negotiations are sure to be tricky. Those are the roughly 700,000 immigrants in the country illegally who were brought to the U.S.as children. Congressional leaders from both parties plan budget talks with President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a press conference on Thursday that it is one of the party's priorities.

Meadows said they'll help it pass to avoid distractions from the GOP drive to push their treasured $1.5 trillion tax bill through Congress this month.

But Meadows warned that GOP leaders would face backlash from Republicans if they agree to Democrats' demands on immigration in the spending bill.

Last week, an unexpected attack by Trump on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Pelosi prompted the two to skip a bargaining session that was planned then.

"We're all here as a very friendly, well-unified group".

Pelosi and Schumer, in a joint statement, described the White House meeting as "productive".

"Until we get those assurances, we are just kicking a can down the road", said Republican Representative Andy Biggs, a member of the Freedom Caucus.

"It's kind of just basic governing, is keeping government going while we negotiate the finer details", Ryan told reporters Thursday morning.

The House of Representatives on Thursday narrowly passed a stop-gap spending measure to continue funding the federal government through December 22.

The House Democrats' gradual retreat will likely be matched by Senate Democrats, likely postponing a debate over migration and amnesty into January or February when GOP leaders push Sen.

The drama over whether the House will pass legislation preventing a weekend partial government shutdown is essentially over. Conservatives had threatened to oppose the legislation.

"This tax code is pushing American businesses and American jobs overseas", said Speaker Ryan.

"If a shutdown happens as the president seemed to be rooting for earlier in his tweet this year, it will fall on his shoulders", he said on the Senate floor Thursday.

"I want to avoid a headline that says President Trump's administration just passes the highest spending levels in USA history", Meadows told two reporters.
