Introducing Stories Highlights and Stories Archive

The update reflects just how serious Instagram is about Stories.

You can save the Instagram Stories into an archive and build a highlights reel from previous Stories, the app announced on its blog today. Facebook is looking for new ways to compete with Snap Inc.'s Snapchat.

The first new feature is a Story Archive. The new features will be available in version 25 of Instagram for iOS and Android. Once you're done, your highlight will appear as a circle on your profile that plays as a stand-alone story when someone taps it. Highlights stay on your profile until you remove them, and you can have as many highlights as you'd like.

And for good reason - part of the company's reasoning behind Stories in the first place (besides competing with Snapchat, that is) was that users were so exacting about what was on their profile that they weren't posting almost as often as Instagram wanted. To edit or remove a highlight, just tap and hold that highlight on your profile.

The second feature that is coming to Stories is called Archive. This will make it so that your stories disappear forever 24 hours after they're uploaded.

Ahead, we walk through exactly how to use each of these two brilliant new functions - so you won't ever again have to wish you saved your Stories from the night before.

Do you think you'll use these new Stories features? You'll find Stories Highlights on your profile below the biography. Stories, which are collections of personal photos and video, previously expired in 24 hours. From there, you can choose any stories from your archive, select a cover for your highlight and give it a name. Once the new Highlight is created, anyone that visits your profile will see it as a standalone story on your profile.

The Archive is private, so only the user can view their own stuff while it's in there.
