An allleged terror plot to assassinate British Prime Minister Theresa May has reportedly been thwarted

British authorities said Tuesday they believe they have foiled an assassination plot against Prime Minister Theresa May, according to multiple reports.

Andrew Parker, the head of MI5, briefed U.K. Cabinet ministers about the thwarted plot on Tuesday, indicating the "seriousness" of what Britain's domestic counterintelligence and security agency had uncovered, Sky News reports.

Two men were arrested last week and have been charged with preparing acts of terrorism, according to Sky.

"It is in essence an extreme Islamist suicide plot against Downing Street".

MI5 has prevented nine terror attacks in the United Kingdom within the past year, director Andrew Parker said Tuesday, according to The Guardian.

The report also said that between March and June, there had been four terror attacks in London and Manchester which killed 36 people and injured another 200.

He said MI5 investigators had misinterpreted intelligence on Abedi.

"In retrospect, the intelligence can be seen to have been highly relevant to the planned attack", Anderson said. Most terror plots continued to be foiled before they are launched, he said.

Two Muslim men are suspected of conspiring to attack Downing Street armed with an improvised bomb, suicide vest and knives. The then prime minister, John Major, was inside but was not hurt.

In 1991, the IRA managed to breach security, launching a homemade mortar bomb attack on Number 10.

The IRA had previously targeted prime minister Margaret Thatcher at the Conservative conference in Brighton in 1984.
