Lebanon PM Hariri revokes resignation as all parties agree on deal

As for the necessary guarantees to implement the new statement, the sources said: "The President of the Republic is the main guarantor, and those who announced their consent shall commit to the settlement and respect his speech at the political and practical levels".

Lebanon's prime minister said he would remain in office after governing partners pledged to stay out of neighboring conflicts, a month after his resignation threatened to drag the country deeper into the Middle East's major sectarian confrontation.

"The council of ministers thanks the prime minister for rescinding his resignation", Hariri said, reading from a cabinet statement issued after its first meeting since his return two weeks ago. The nature of the announcement raised suspicions that it was orchestrated by Saudi Arabia, his main backer.

President Michel Aoun had asked him to "put it on hold ahead of further consultations". Hariri, however, who is friendlier towards Saudi Arabia and has sent his children to school there, has a darker history with the group - his father, former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, was killed in a bombing blamed on Hezbollah in 2005. Hariri arrived in France on Saturday from Saudi Arabia and may be back in Beirut next week, seeking to dispel fears that he had been held against his will and forced to resign by Saudi authorities. Despite the policy, Hezbollah became heavily involved there, sending thousands of fighters to help President Bashar al-Assad.

Lebanon, where Sunni, Shi'ite, Christian and Druze groups fought a civil war from 1975-1990, has a governing system created to share power among sectarian groups.

The resignation was seen as part of the boiling tensions between the Saudi kingdom - which had long backed Hariri - and its regional rival Iran.

"Developments in the region suggest a new wave of conflict".

"The attack on Gulf states in the media and politics is an issue which threatens the Lebanon's interests and especially the interest of Lebanese working in the Gulf", he said.

"If we are rejecting interference by any state in Lebanese affairs, it can not be that we accept that any Lebanese side interferes in the affairs of Arab states", he added.

On November 4, Hariri had announced his resignation from Saudi capital, Riyadh, citing threat to his life. Western governments, including the United States, stressed their support for Hariri and Lebanon.

Minutes after Hariri's announcement, Paris said the Lebanese premier would attend talks Friday in France on the situation in Lebanon, which US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will also attend.
