Luke Shaw claps the fans following Manchester United's win over CSKA Moscow

"Luke Shaw offensively was very good and made a great contribution for the team", Mourinho told BT Sport.

It has been a roller-coaster journey for Shaw since his mega-money move from Southampton back in the summer of 2014, a roller-coaster which has a lot more dips than climbs as the full-back has struggled to find fitness and form since hishorrific leg break back in 2015.

The England worldwide has been largely out-of-favour since Mourinho took over the reins at Old Trafford from ex-Barcelona manager Louis van Gaal in May 2016.

'He was waiting for quite a long time, he has been deserving for quite a long time. He won the club's man of the match award, voted by fans. He certainly took his opportunity well and on another day he could have ended the game with a goal and assist, getting a chance himself in the 20 minute and providing both Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford with chances both should have done better with.

Shaw has found opportunities very hard to come by at United under Mourinho, who has publicly criticised the defender previously. "And he's going to get more because the performance was really positive".

"I'm not proud because we've had some bad results at home", Mourinho said after the CSKA victory.

Reports last week claimed Mourinho has prioritised signing a new left-back in the winter transfer window and that the unsettled Rose was his primary target.

United are back in action on Sunday afternoon when the Red Devils host Manchester City in the derby.

Mourinho told Shaw ahead of Tuesday's game that it was not a test, but more so an opportunity to play.

"I wanted to make changes but changes in players that need a change and not spend a change on Luke", Mourinho added.

Paul Pogba, who had starred in United's 3-1 win over Arsenal on the weekend before getting sent off for a rash challenge, was running the show once again and his through-balls to the galloping Shaw were creating havoc on the wings.
