NFF sets up 4-man committee — Federation Internationale de Football Association sanction

FIFA fines Nigeria for fielding ineligible player in World Cup qualifier

Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi, vice president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been named head of a 4-man panel to unravel the issues behind the slip that led to Nigeria forfeiting the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Algeria in Constantine on 10th November, 2017.

Nigeria, who had already qualified for the finals, drew 1-1 but Federation Internationale de Football Association awarded the match to Algeria by a 3-0 scoreline after the Super Eagles fielded the ineligible Abdullahi Shehu who had failed to serve a one-match ban for accumulated yellow cards.

Abdullahi played 90 minutes against Algeria even though he should have been suspended for picking up yellow cards in two previous qualifiers.

The football governing body declared the match forfeited and awarded 3-0 in favour of Algeria. Thankfully, the sanctions did not affect Nigeria's qualification for the 2018 World Cup.

The match which was both teams' concluding match in the series had ended in a 1-1 draw, but Federation Internationale de Football Association on Tuesday awarded all three points to Algeria.

Meanwhile, NFF president Amaju Pinnick has directed that an internal probe be set up and persons found guilty be dealt with.

Nigeria, who topped African Group B, finished on 12 points instead of 14, four clear of second-placed Zambia.

Reacting, Pinnick, who accepted the decision, said it will not distract the NFF nor the Super Eagles as they prepare for the 2018 World Cup.

"This is a grave error and somebody must be punished", Olajire quoted the NFF boss as saying in a statement on Tuesday. We apologise to Nigerians for this and assure that this will not in any way derail or even distract us in our well -laid plan to ensure that the Super Eagles have a great outing in Russian Federation.

He said, "We're looking at three countries".

The NFF technical committee is saddled which such responsibility of documenting sanctioned players.

Ladipo said: "It's disheartening that this could happen in a big country like Nigeria; it is a shame and an embarrassment that the NFF could not tidy up their end".
