Northlake Mall lets special needs children meet Santa during closed hours

Autism Society of Alaska hosts alternative to the overwhelming experience of sitting on Santa's lap

"The Santa got down on the floor with my boys and played with them and just was willing to really work with them and get them comfortable", Benavides said.

"I do think that it does create an awareness for families that have special needs and just the general public that may not know what it's all about", said Kat Stark, Marketing Director for the Rushmore Mall.

That's where the event "Santa Cares" comes in.

Northlake Mall held a special event called "Soothing Santa" that allows children living with autism to take pictures with Santa and pass along their wish list before the mall opened.

"It's epic! It's huge", said parent Pam Dore.

Parents register online to reserve a spot and avoid the hours long wait on line that's typical of other photo sessions with Santa.

Brett Flannery says "Santa Cares" gave his family the opportunity to do something most people get to enjoy normally.

This year, Autism Speaks partnered with Oak Park Mall to make several changes to this classic holiday tradition. "They are trained on working with families with kids of special needs of a wide array of special needs".

"It makes it doable", said Smith".

Terri Dalberg, whose son has autism, said the special accommodations made the difference, and she hopes other event organizers consider doing the same.

In all, about thirty families were able to take pictures with Santa during Sunday's event.

"We were able to pick a time, come down, and they had stuff for them to do while they were waiting".
