Odie gets the last laugh: Dogs revealed to be smarter than cats!

Vanderbilt study determines dogs may be smarter than cats

And just to make the cat lovers a little happier, our feline friends have about the same number of neurons as brown bears despite having brains 10 times smaller.

The study was conducted by researchers from six universities in the US, Brazil, Denmark and South Africa.

This finding was provisionally accepted for publication and will soon publish in the journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. "At the least, we now have some biology that people can factor into their discussions about who's smarter, cats or dogs". The human brain possesses 16 billion neurons.

That is not to say your cat isn't smart, and a lot of different factors go into this, but at the end of the day, the animal waiting at the door for you with the wagging tail has nearly three hundred million more critical neurons than a cat, and you can not argue science.

The researchers discovered that dogs have 530 million neurons in their cerebral cortex, while cats have only around 250 million.

Based on the number of neurons found, they speculated that dogs have roughly the same intelligence as raccoons and lions, while domestic cats have comparable intelligence to bears.

"Meat eating is largely considered a problem-solver in terms of energy, but, in retrospect, it is clear that carnivory must impose a delicate balance between how much brain and body a species can afford", said Herculano-Houzel. While different parts of the brain process outside stimuli like sight and touch, the cerebral cortex puts these stimuli together to drive decision-making and problem-solving, among other functions.

Of course, such an arbitrary measurement of the brain is not an objective metric of such a complex trait as intelligence.

The research was done in the lab of Suzana Herculano-Houzel, an associate professor of psychology and biological sciences at Vanderbilt University.

The research team has so far focused on studying carnivorous land animals, but they hope to one day study marine mammals.
