First phase of demolition at Pontiac Silverdome fails

Michigan's Pontiac Silverdome was set for a partial demolition Sunday morning but the building failed to come down after the charges detonated.

Unfortunately, conducting the demolition becomes considerably more hard with the structure weakened making setting additional charges extremely unsafe. At 8:30 a.m., the first charge went off.

So, yeah. That didn't go as planned.

Within a couple of minutes of the explosions, a work crew could be seen entering the stadium to assess the problem.

Crews were to partially implode the mechanical equipment platform at the top of the 400,000 square foot building. It may take hours or days.

Here is what was supposed to happen, via Fox 2 in Detroit: One blast was to break the metal beams supporting the upper ring of the dome.

The remainder of the demolition process will be handled through the use of hydraulic excavators and will be completed in sections.

A total of 1,800 tons of rebar and 1,700 tons of structural steel will be recycled at the city's Ferrous Processing plant. The Lions played in Pontiac in suburban Detroit from 1975 through 2001. It also held the World Cup and WrestleMania.
