Yes I will’ Vladimir Putin announces run for re-election in 2018

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said he would seek a new six-year term in the country's March elections in a move that would make him the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin.

Putin was president for two terms between 2000 and 2008, before paving way for his current prime minister Dimitry Medvedev who ruled for four years with Putin as PM.

Backed by state television, Putin regularly enjoys approval ratings of around 80 per cent, and his decision to run for re-election, which he announced at a vehicle factory in the Volga river city of Nizhny Novgorod, was widely expected.

"There's no better place or opportunity to put my candidacy forward. I'm sure that everything will work out for us".

Ksenia Sobchak, a TV host who is the daughter of late former St Petersburg mayor Anatoly Sobchak, who was Putin's boss in the 1990s, is also likely to join the field.

The Russian television journalist Ksenia Sobchak has confirmed she will stand for election as well, while the main opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, is now barred from standing after he was found guilty of embezzlement, a charge he claims was politically motivated.

While few doubted that Mr Putin would run in the March 18 vote, a delay in announcing his bid was seen as part of the Kremlin's political manoeuvring. That tally includes Putin's time as prime minister; another six-year term as president would put him closer to Stalin's almost 30-year reign.

Allies laud Putin as a father-of-the-nation figure who has restored national pride and expanded Moscow's global clout with interventions in Syria and Ukraine. His critics accuse him of overseeing a corrupt authoritarian system and of illegally annexing Ukraine's Crimea, a move that has isolated Russian Federation.

In comments released by the Kremlin, Putin said the military operation in the area was now finished, and that the focus would switch to a political process that would eventually involve presidential and parliamentary elections.

He would be barred by the constitution from seeking a fifth presidential term in 2024.

Putin has effectively been in power in Russian Federation since 2000. That decision will trigger a round of intrigue over the succession, as whoever holds the prime minister's post is often viewed as the president's heir apparent.
