NHL says Seattle can apply for franchise, start season-ticket drive

Previously, the city of Las Vegas paid $500 million for the Golden Knights expansion team that took the ice for the first time this season.

Bettman says the expansion fee for Seattle would be $650 million.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the NHL Board of Governors has agreed to accept and consider the application from Seattle and allow the Bonderman group, which is tied to the KeyArena expansion, to conduct a season ticket drive.

After the news that the Seattle City Council had approved the renovation plan to KeyArena, Seattle immediately became the hottest free agent of all the cities on the market. "This is a process that we go through".

There's no guarantee that Seattle will land a professional hockey team, but it's now up to sports fans in the rapidly growing city to demonstrate that they'd be willing to support a team - beyond the Seahawks or the Mariners - with their season-ticket dollars.

Bettman said the group is only looking at Seattle for expansion, leaving Quebec City and Houston alone. "Because we're not anticipating anybody moving right now".

In other National Hockey League franchise news on Thursday, Dallas-based entrepreneur Tom Dundon has signed an agreement to purchase a majority stake in the Carolina Hurricanes.

On Thursday, Bettman and the NHL Board of Governors gave Seattle the green light to start the application process.

Dundon is the 46-year-old former CEO of Santander Consumer USA, a Dallas-based lending firm.

In a statement, Dundon called Carolina "a team on the rise".
