'It' Star Jack Dylan Grazer Joins DC Superhero Film 'Shazam!'

Dwayne Johnson will not appear as the villain Black Adam in the film and is developing a solo film for the anti-hero as a separate project.

Jack Dylan Grazer has joined New Line Cinema's Shazam! as Freddy Freeman (a.k.a. Captain Marvel Jr.), according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is pretty big news for fans of classic and modern Shazam since Freddy has always been a vital part of the character's mythos.

Plot details on Shazam! remain under wraps for now, but Asher Angel will co-star as Billy Batson, the young boy who can transform into the adult superhero named Shazam!, played by Zachary Levi. No further details were available.

Shazam is a DC Comics character who first debuted in 1939 with the original name of Captain Marvel. While fishing with his grandfather Jacob, the Freemans go from innocent bystanders to victims of this battle with Jacob dying in the aftermath.

This may not be the way the live-action movie plays things out with Freddy and Billy, but it'd certainly be a way to tug at the heartstrings and connect both the superhero and childhood storylines of the title character. The film is being directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) from a script written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Filming is expected to start next year.
