South Africa's Ramaphosa gets most nominations ahead of ANC leadership vote

The race to succeed President Jacob Zuma as ANC leader looks tipped in current Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's favour, with voting data on Monday showing him ahead of main rival Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Mpumalanga ANC chairperson David Mabuza was nominated by 434 branches for the position of deputy president having beaten ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize at 59 and Naledi Pandor at 53.

Dlamini-Zuma's slate will not be entirely pleased with the numbers as it showed Ramaphosa had made good inroads in KwaZulu-Natal.

Selane says they are still maintaining their view that Dlamini-Zuma must be the president of the party.

The Gauteng branches have consolidated their votes, and announced their nominations for the new African National Congress leadership to be appointed at the upcoming national elective conference. Therefore, there will be no "Unity" on the ballot (paper).

"All members of the ANC should be the guarantors and guardians of unity in the province".

"So he (Unity) may be disqualified on the basis of short-term membership - he doesn't have the 10 years required". Provincial executive committees also vote, as do national executive committee members.

Most investors favor Ramaphosa, 65, a lawyer, former labor-union leader and one of the wealthiest black South Africans, who has pledged to revive the ailing economy, reduce a 28 percent unemployment rate and combat corruption if elected.

In what is expected to be a bruising battle for the top six positions of the party, Mantashe acknowledged that horse-trading between delegates supporting the respective candidates could be a reality, and that it would not be frowned upon by the party and might have to be welcomed.
