Trump's Jerusalem decision could incite extremists, Iraq warns

Demonstrators protest next to the US embassy in Ankara on Dec. 6 2017 after U.S. president recognised the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital

Trump announced plans on Wednesday to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, in addition to plans to move the US capital from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The U.S. State Department has issued a "worldwide caution" warning after President Donald Trump's announcement Wednesday the U.S. would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and move the American embassy there.

An Iran-backed militia operating in Iraq echoed Baghdad's statement, saying Trump's "stupid decision" would be a "legitimate reason" to attack US troops in Iraq, Reuters reported.

The US, which is leading a large-scale operation against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Iraq, has about 5,200 troops in the country, according to the latest statement from the US Defense Department.

Nujaba, which has about 10,000 fighters, is one of the most important militias in Iraq.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said he warned Trump of the "dangerous consequences" of such a move on security, the peace process, and stability in the region.

Al-Abadi called on the US government to reverse that decision, because it can lead to an escalation of extremism and atmosphere conducive to terrorism around the world. Though made up of Iraqis, it is backed by Iran and is helping Tehran create a supply route through Iraq to Damascus. The PMF is government sanctioned and formally reports to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's office.

Trump's defiant move - fulfilling a pledge made during his 2016 presidential campaign - ends seven decades of USA ambiguity on the status of the Holy City, which is vociferously claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians.

He did say that the Palestinian protests are concerning, but said that once emotions die down he believes there will be a better chance to negotiate between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Protest and skirmishes erupted on Thursday in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip where the Palestinian Authority has called for general strikes.

Hamas has fought three wars with Israel since 2007.

For that reason, he reiterated what was established on June 4, 1967, with the restoration of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
