While in Islamabad, Secretary Mattis met with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Minister of Defense Khurram Dastigir Khan, according to a readout provided by the U.S. Defense Department.

The visit takes place at a time when Pakistan faces tough times ahead in the wake of veiled United States threats of renewed sanctions over Islamabad's alleged inability to curb terrorism and hunt down Afghan Taliban's Haqqani network, now engaged in carrying out attacks against American troops operating in the war-torn country.

"You begin by seeking their (Pakistan's) assistance", Pompeo said, noting that Secretary Mattis during his Islamabad visit will "make clear the President's intent" and "deliver the message that we would love you to do that (destroy the safe havens)".

Both sides released comments saying that the USA and Pakistan want to continue to work together and that Islamabad plays a key role in the struggle for peace in Afghanistan.

Articulating Pakistan's perspective, the Prime Minister noted that no other country benefits more from peace and stability in Afghanistan than Pakistan.

"On one hand, yes, they do not like terrorism, or attacks from terrorism in their country".

Mattis did not speak while reporters were present.

Mattis was received by officials from the Defence Ministry, Foreign Ministry and the US Embassy upon his arrival, a Foreign Office statement said. Asked if Mattis set any timelines, the official said the urgency of the matter was communicated.

Pakistan has also been upset at Trump's calls for an increased Indian role in rebuilding Afghanistan.

Matters of mutual interest, including the USA policy in South Asia and Afghan peace efforts, were discussed during the meeting with Prime Minister Abbasi, according to Geo News.

Earlier, speaking to reporters, the USA defense chief said: "We have heard from Pakistan leaders that they do not support terrorism".

U.S. Secretary for Defense, Jim Mattis, sits opposite Britain's Secretary of State for Defence, Gavin Williamson, before a meeting at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in central London, Britain November 10, 2017.

Since the start of the war in Afghanistan, militants in Pakistan have crossed the mountainous and ill-defined border to wage attacks, then return to safe havens in Pakistan, where they have had a long-standing relationship with the ISI, Islamabad's intelligence agency. The White House said the release could have repercussions for U.S. -Pakistan relations.

"They identified certain steps that they were going to take".

"We have not seen those changes implemented yet", he told reporters.

"We're hoping to see those changes", he said.

The Prime Minister reiterated there are no safe havens in Pakistan and the entire nation was committed to its resolve on eradicating terrorism once and for all in all its forms and manifestations.

Imtiaz Gul, an Islamabad security analyst, said USA officials always come to Islamabad with their "own wish list".

The defense secretary was also briefed on efforts and measures taken to secure the Pakistan-Afghan border.

Gul said relations between Pakistan and the USA have gone from bad to worse since the Trump administration announced Afghan strategy in which Pakistan was degraded and India was elevated.
