Results showed that the capacity of wine glasses in England increased significantly over the past 300 years, with a marked increase since the 1990s.

While most Londoners will be familiar with the experience of paying an arm and a leg for a measly 125ml, it turns out glassware, and the measures we drink from them, are much larger now than in the past.

"Red wine, for example, is served in a larger glass to allow it to breathe, something which perhaps wasn't a priority 300 years ago", Beale said.

They conclude: "If the effect of larger wine glasses on drinking proves reliable, regulating glass size as part of local licensing regulations would expand the policy options for reducing drinking outside the home".

The capacity of wine glasses has increased seven-fold over the past 300 years, and most steeply in the last two decades as wine consumption rose, a study in the United Kingdom has found.

However, larger wine glasses are among a number of factors - including lower prices, increased availability and marketing - that may have contributed to the increase in wine consumption.

"Wine will no doubt be a feature of some merry Christmas nights, but when it comes to how much we drink, wine glass size probably does matter", lead author of the study Theresa Marteau told the Guardian.

I's not now possible, based on this research, to say that there's a causal link between an increase in glass sizes and an increase in wine consumption, or that reducing one would reduce the other. For example, demand for larger wine glasses by the United States market was met by an increase in the size of glasses manufactured in England, and size was influenced by those running bars and restaurants, who sought to increase sales of wine.

They found the average glass in 1700 contained just 66ml - around the amount in a double shot of spirits.

They searched online and contacted experts in antique glassware, eventually gathering measurements for 411 glasses from five sources in England, dating from 1700 to 2017.

The researchers said they can not say for sure that the increase in glass size is a direct cause of the rise in wine consumption but it "may have contributed".

Since the 1960s, the consumption of alcohol has also risen significantly as a outcome of greater availability and affordability, an increase in alcohol marketing and more liberal licensing laws. Meanwhile, wine consumption nearly doubled between 1980 and 2004. Beyond the technological and financial resources that make larger wine glasses possible, plenty of wine aficionados will quickly remind you that a wine glass is not to be filled: The extra room is to let the wine breath.

'We predict - with moderate confidence - that, while there will be some resistance to these suggestions, ' say researchers, 'their palatability will be greater in the month of January than that of December'.
